@Henry — LOL at your comment. Um, seems you’re taking the moral high ground… yet, FYI, Dan York and I are still Facebook friends and he wrote a fascinating counter post to mine and no body was vindictive - neither me in this post nor him in his. I think you may have the wrong end of the stick. I chose to approve your comment on my blog because, I rarely ever delete/disprove comments.
…and am repeating here as an update to let you know I give the new Facebook Design TWO THUMBS UP!!!
~~~
As a professional who uses Facebook solely for business purposes, I am a HUGE *raving* fan of the new Facebook design!
Yes, it took a little getting used to with the combo MiniFeed & Wall… and disappearing apps. (I can appreciate from a developers standpoint, the new app display is frustrating).
However, here’s what I LOVE about the new design:
* the ubiquitous commenting feature and ability to comment on the fly (*even* on ads!!),
* the LIVE FEED (awesome feature for realtime action & connecting),
* the feed filters - including by Friend Lists (I recommend keeping lists of your top key contacts for a quick check in to their activities in your News Feed!!),
* the customizable less of/more of feed stories (much easier now to train FB exactly what you want in your Feed),
* the mini bio under your profile pic,
* ability to display 12 specific friends,
* easier Status Update (that only posts when you click the button, not like before),
* easy edit “pencil” for all sections of your profile,
* easy app editing.
Okay, did I mention I LOVE the new FB design? And I reckon any biz user who doesn’t like the new design (yet!) hasn’t quite grasped the full power of the platform. Hopefully these tidbits I’ve shared help!!
@Iyabo Aha, I’m following you back now on Twitter! It’s so good to tweet/meet you! Thank you SO much for your kind feedback. Your kind words made my day.
@Kelley Whew!!! SO glad to hear that - with your organizational expertise, I’ll bet it’s a relief to have a clean FB requests page now! Way to go!
@Govindji Hm, it can take time to make those tweaks! Hang in there, you’re doing great!
@Heather Yes, isn’t it an odd feeling to be tagged for no apparent reason?! I once had a prominent internet marketer tag me in a video of a song he wrote and performed. I listened all the way through… only to find zero mention. Nada. Zip. I was like “whaaaaa?” & removed the tag! Re your Q on vids - absolutely!! Do you have Camtasia Studio? That’s great for screen capture. Otherwise just use your webcam for starters. Be sure to follow @LouBortone if you aren’t already - he’s da video master!
@Sam Thanks for your input!! For sure, if you know someone wants to be included, go ahead and tag them! There are different schools of thought and there will always be exceptions to any “rules”.
@Glen SO true. Your 10 cents is right on the money!!! lol. Seriously, it’s ALL about reaching out to connect individually… at first. Once the relationship is more established, ‘en masse’ communication may be more acceptable. Or simply use Groups.
@Ann - thank you so much, oh master of da clock!!! Very well said.
@Stephanie - I love the draft items suggestion! Wish we had a draft folder in FB, but next time I could type up in Outlook first!
@Mary - yay, very wise words. I’m a big fan of AFGO’s no matter how unpleasant at the time. Hubby and I have our fair share. (AFGO = another f’ing growth opportunity!)
@CoachEva - I really love your outlook and the reframe of ‘path of most allowance.’ Brilliant! Excellent suggestion to send ‘em LouTube’s Spam I Am vid!! hehee
@Mark David - yes, soon enough the revert to old FB option will disappear and we’ll all be on the new design. Meantime, I do hope the FB team are listening to the feedback. Actually, they do seem to be inviting input with the badge on our home page right above birthdays and they have their own fan page for the new profile. Hmmm.
@Marilyn - very well said. I guess time will tell if all the new features stick or they do something to return us to that ’single pass’ profile which was way more effective, imho.
Re your Merch store app - first see if you can add it as a box to your Wall tab and/or you may be able to create a standalone Tab for certain apps. Here’s how:
Mouseover Applications > click See All My Applications > click All Applications > click pencil next to Merch app > click Edit Settings > click Profile tab in popup window > if you can create a solo Tab, click Add.
@Nancy - thanks a mil for your kind words, Nancy. It’s my pleasure to share what I’m discovering anyway!
@Michele - thanks a mil! I look forward to seeing more improvements on the new design!
@Sharon - thanks a mil for this beautifully demonstrated course of action. You took the time to read my post, make a comment and tweet with the link. I totally agree with what you say. It’s just helping to share the love!
I enjoy Buckminster Fuller’s concept around this: “Precession.” Like a pebble in a pond and the ripples go out. Like the bee enjoying the flowers who’s actually helping to pollinate. We never know our precessional effect: one tidbit we share on Twitter, Facebook or wherever could make all the difference to our peeps.
@Mick Wow, really good point about tracking invitees… to anything for that matter. Hm.
@Darwin Great point for sure, one that I adopt too.
@Chris Another great suggestion - I hadn’t appreciated this before. You’re absolutely right. Hm, I could swear they used to have a Leave Group option when you went to see all.
@Debi Thanks a mil for your kind feedback! I’m glad to bring ya value!
@Peter yay! Thanks a mil - I agree with the “find a proven path from social media to IM and back.” Well said. And you’re among my both camps peeps for sure; I always enjoy our interactions and value our friendship that started on Facebook last year!
@Melanie hey there! thx for your great feedback - that is too fun you’re reading my blog for homework from The Blog Squad. Denise & Patsi totally rock - I love their Blogging & Beyond Mentorship Program. I went to take a peek at your blog, but it doesn’t appear to be up… yet?
@Anthony - I’m glad to hear you’re not a numbers-based competitive type either!!
@Jacqui excellent point about how we approach networking F2F being just as relevant online.
@Marc I like what you say about no remorse. Very true. The person doesn’t even know they’ve been removed unless they proactively go looking for you in their feed or your profile. You’re right too, no different in-person!
@Mary I have asked people to stop with the invites… one guy I recall kept doing Events somewhere exotic like Barbados. I kept getting daily invites, so asked him to please not include me .. and he just told me to remove him as a friend. Fair enuf.
@Shama wow, 3 chances eh? You’re generous. LOL
@WebSuccessDiva hey Maria, thx heaps! & appreciate you tweeting my post today too.
@Jim two thumbs up! Thx for your perspective too.
Whew, I was a tad apprehensive writing this post… you just never know if some peeps will get upset. Oh well. But I do agree with Mary, I feel *liberated* too!
@Emily - great point! I’m all for changing profile pics from time to time - it’s a good way to create visibility in your friends’ News Fees. But for sure it should still represent you well.
@Dr. Mani - thank you! And your friendly appealing pic represents you well.
@Susan - you know, you bring up a good point!! I use Skype for chatting a lot and I’m pretty sure all the folks I IM w/ on Skype are also my FB friends. I’m experimenting with changing from Offline to Online for just a few minutes here and there to see what happens. heehee.
@fundivaChristy I loved all the replies - whether immediately useful or not. I saw each reply as a demonstration of that person’s genuine willingness to contribute and add value. And, like Seth Godin talks about, it’s the “drip, drip, drip of the tweet.” I’m more likely to remember the people who sent a reply that didn’t!
Re my Twitter client - I’ve experimented a lot with desktop ones, Twhirl being the latest. And, maybe because I’m so visual or I need an expanded view or something, but I just keep coming back to the website. I love to be at my own page with my fun pic grinning back at me (LOL!) and I like to be able to click onto someone else’s page real quick and get their vibe, check their first name, etc. I also use these tools quite a bit: http://tweetscan.comhttp://quotably.com and http://twitter.summize.com
@Erin - thanks heaps for being the voice of the VAs. It’s such a trusted position and I know you’re first class in all you do. I actually think Ms. X used the poor VA as a scapegoat. (I hear ya on the LOA!)
@Judy - your comment warmed my heart and made my day!
@Denise - I emailed you the gal’s identity. You make a valid point… Should anyone else wish to know her identity, let me know & I’ll gladly share in private.
@Donna - yikes, you sure had to learn the hard way too. Glad to hear you were able to tighten up your guidelines as a result though.
@Patty - wow, that’s really good to know about the ISPs and the DMC Act. I’ll bet you have a tougher time tracking unauthorized use of your work - is it hard to set a Google alert for an image file? Then people can always change the file name. Hm.
@Stan - I do hear you on the PDF e-books. I know there are executable e-book programs out there that helps authors protect their content a little more. However, because Adobe is so prolific, it always seems the best way to go for me. When you bring in software, there might be more tech support and/or refunds. Like you, I also believe most people are au fait with copyright and tend to exercise proper protocol.
@Elizabeth - wow, thank you so much for this terrific information! Yes, you’re right about the high profile part. I do have Google alerts, but will look closer to see if I can add a few more key words/phrases.
Thanks, Elizabeth. I appreciate your kind words! I’m a fiend for details as you could probably tell!! And of course passionate about people.
It was a treat to be able to include you. I look forward to bringing you much exposure over the coming year and more. And keep me posted on your own launch - I’d love to help.
Liked it here? Why not try sites on the blogroll...
Registering your Facebook Username - Second Wave, Verified Accounts
June 28th, 2009 at 5:16 am@Chris & @Dave — regards the verification process, I’m guessing that when you go to http://facebook.com/username on/after the time, and they need you to verify your account, there’ll be instructions. Otherwise, see if you can verify here: http://www.facebook.com/mobile/?settings#/mobile/?account
…in fact, I just added a whole new section to the top of this blog post ‘cuz it seems rather elusive!
