Top Ten Tips For Creating BUZZ With Facebook Events

Posted on May 4th, 2009.

Facebook events calendar Whether you attend events via Facebook and/or you host your own, this post and video may be of interest to you. I really think there is a fine art to using the Facebook Events feature effectively.

When setting up the event, as an organizer, I highly recommend you leave all the default settings the way they are - that is, allow guests to invite others, upload photos, write on the wall, etc. The reason being is every one of these activities creates news items that go out into the feeds of those individuals and of their friends. This is great viral visibility for you and for them.

Create buzz with your Facebook Events And, as an attendee of any event on Facebook, you can easily help create buzz and visibility for both yourself and the event organizer. Win:win!

I do recommend being strategic and mindful about the events you do RSVP for. (I’m sure, like me, you get your fair share of non-relevant Event invitations!)

As you’ll see in the video below, I show you a way you can easily write on the wall of any Event without even going to the Event page!

Also, when setting up your own events, be sure to choose a really catchy title, sub-title and photo - these three fields are the only ones seen in the Requests when you invite your friends (and they invite their friends). The small greeting you can include goes out in the email notification, so that’s important too.

Here are my top ten tips for creating buzz - as a Facebook Event attendee and/or host!

1) RSVP and write a message in the box on your Requests page (watch the video below for a demo of what happens!)

2) Write on the Wall - whether your RSVP is a Yes, No or Maybe.

3) Upload Photo(s).

4) Upload Video(s).

5) Post relevant links using Links.

6) Click on “Invite People to Come” and invite your friends.

7) Click the Share button and Post to your Profile with a message.

8) Click the Share button and send to specific friend(s) or a List(s). (Use with discretion).

9) Click the Like link and/or add a Comment on any Photo, Video or Link.

10) Send out a tweet(s) on Twitter with the link to the Facebook event.

For this video tutorial, I used the upcoming Social Media Success Summit by way of example.

You’re welcome to tweet the main link to the Summit and/or shorten your own: http://www.socialmediasummit09.com/ The hashtag for this event is: #smss09. (Don’t know what hashtags are? Refer to my hashtag video on YouTube here).

By the way, this is the Facebook video embedded here. I goofed and made the video a wee bit longer than 10 minutes, so YouTube dumped it. I just checked Viddler and they’re down for updating. ;)

Sooo, let me know what you think of these tips!! Were they helpful? Did you learn something new about Facebook Events? What has your experience been so far of Facebook Events? And, will we “see” you at the Social Media Success Summit?! …featuring Gary Vaynerchuk, Denise Wakeman, Chris Garrett, Michael Stelzner, Ann Handley, Darren Rowse, Brian Clark, Jason Alba and myself! Mari, this is why you are my Facebook/Twitter guru! Not only did you offer valuable tips, you even used the Facebook video embed feature. Also, very smart to use as an example your upcoming social media event! It makes this post more relevant to understanding Facebook event buzz. I picked up a few things from the video and a few ideas to utilize.

Great post! w00t!

Mari, very, very helpful especially for those of us who are not “tech savvy.” Thanks for this clear explanation!

Thanks Mari for the valuable information. You are so generous with your info! I always learn something from you. By the way I can hardly wait for for the Social Media Summit!

Thanks for this…very helpful.

How do you, “RSVP and write a message in the box on your Requests page?” Can’t seem to find that one.

Could have started with a definition; never heard of a Facebook event. Is the 1st step above how you create one?

Hey Mari, this top ten list is fantastic, thank you for all the recommendations. We will have to incorporate them if we begin out facebook events we have been considering doing. You can post this to our site http://www.toptentopten.com/ and link back to your site. We are trying to create a directory for top ten lists where people can find your site. The coolest feature is you can let other people vote on the rankings of your list.

Terrific information. Thanks so much.

I am hearing so much complaining from everybody that the Event function in Facebook is becoming obnoxious.

People’s Inboxes are flooded with event invitations for every little thing–most of which they don’t care about.

I wonder if this feature will get really old really fast.

Will I continue to use it? Probably, but carefully.

Thanks so much for the tips. I am looking for ways to make a facebook page with a main URL.. is that possible?

FB events generally work well, but I wish it were easier to combine them with Google Calendar so people both inside and outside FB could easily share info on e.g. “concerts in our local area” and incorporate it into their own personal calendars. FB’s ‘export events’ feature and http://www.fbcal.com both help a bit but timezones get muddled, you can’t filter on just events belonging to a FB group, and automatic updating is awkward. Maybe Google Wave will make everything like this possible?
