New Twitter Home Page With Search, Trending Topics
Two nights ago, I happened to notice a change to the Twitter Home Page - suddenly a master search bar and trending topics appeared. I tweeted about it:
But, several folks tweeted back saying they couldn’t see it on their Twitter Home Page. The page reverted back by the morning.
But now - I just read on TechCrunch that Twitter Confirms And Details New “Discovery Engine”. I checked my Home Page again tonight, and sure enough it’s changed to the new design again! It seems Twitter are experimenting with the roll out in the wee hours. (By the way, the thumbnail avatars of people you follow are still displayed in the new design - just on your Profile page).
The COOL part I hadn’t appreciate until reading @robinwauters‘ TechCrunch post was what Twitter call their “Discovery Engine”
When you do a search, the results no longer appear on a separate page but remain on the homepage, and by default it only crawls the tweets from the accounts you’re following.
…and the ability to save searches! By way of an example, here’s a “vanity search” I recommend you do too - search for your own name without the proper @name syntax.
And then you just click the “Save this search” button and it drops right in under the search bar above the Trending Topics. Neato! Clean! Useful!
However, I have to say, I only use the web about 10% of the time; the rest I’m on Twhirl on my PC and Tweetie on my iPhone so I’m not sure how much difference this new layout will make. How about you? Will you use this new Search/Trending topics area? Or are you a diehard Tweetdeck, Twhirl or other user? Will you convert now?! ha!

The trending topics feature is a great help when marketing a product via twitter. I use it along with the search feature.

I think the new search features and trending will continue to give Twitter the social equity and proof they need that they are live and raw.
I also think these rare and specific roll-outs are carefully done so they can monitor user feedback and measure the usage. It’s clear, among social media pros like you and I, we love it. The question is, will novices agree?

Mari - I guess there is selective roll out of this new feature as I cannot find it either. Maybe only high profile Twitter users are getting it?

What is the advantage of using a Twitter client like Twhirl vs. just using twitter.com?

I noticed this feature as well and it came in time for #journchat! I liked being able to save the search and quickly see how it could be helpful. So many possibilities with the new “Discovery Engine.”

Hey Mari - check it out (watching too much Idol, sorry): you can absolutely run a continuous “scan” for your name or any other keyword right inside twhirl! Check out #1 on my “3 Tools” List http://twurl.nl/ubwufr
I keep trying diff twitter apps (tweetdeck, eventbox, alertthingy, twitterfox etc.) but the simplicity + functionality of twhirl keeps me comin’ back for more
Cheers!

I have multiple Twitter accounts. The one created most recently has the new home page. The others do not. I really like the new home page, and hope it becomes standard for all accounts.
